John Power: record attempt
FORMER Oldham RL Club player John Power, paralysed when he suffered a broken neck in a reserve team game at Dewsbury in 1995, continues his fundraising tomorrow.
Rowing Challenge 2011 takes place at The Zone in Huddersfield, where Power (34) and ex-Salford City Reds star Chris Arden will tackle a half-marathon.
Proceeds go to the RFL's benevolent fund. Power hit the headlines at a similar event in Leeds last year when, using only his arms, he astounded experts by completing a marathon on a static rowing machine in five hours and 26 minutes to raise more than £1,000 for Try Assist, which helps seriously injured players.
"I'm still waiting for clarification that I established a world record," he said.
“But it isn't about that, it's about raising money for Try Assist and enabling the RFL to support members of the rugby league family whose circumstances have changed dramatically as a result of serious injury.
"It might look as though I'm taking an easy option this time, but it will still be tough and I'll be teaming up with Chris to hopefully raise a lot of money again."
