Oldham wait on Fogarty

MATTHEW Fogarty, at 19 the youngest pro on Oldham’s books, hopes to shake off an elbow injury in time to play against Widnes Vikings at Whitebank on Sunday (3pm) in the grand final of the Reserves Under-23s Championship.

He suffered a recurrence of the injury in the senior side’s play-off defeat at Rochdale 11 days ago, but he is making good progress and is included in a provisional 22-man squad for the final showdown.

Having scored eight tries in 13 first-team games in his debut season at the club, the young

centre has more senior experience than every other member of the reserves’ squad apart from former Widnes and Swinton prop Bruce Johnson.

“Foggy is training well and he seems to be okay,” said coach John Hough. “But we will continue to monitor him. He will be given as long as possible to show that he is ready to play.”

The club’s medical staff are also keeping checks on winger Zac Cotton (knee), half-back Jamie Dallimore (hamstring), prop Matty Barber (back) and utility forward Michael Ward (groin).

The squad comprises the 17 players who won at Widnes in the top v second play-off, minus injured centre Paul Brearley, plus backs Fogarty, Alistair Williams (18th man at Widnes), Lewis Brookes and Danny Chetwynd and forwards Alex Eyres and Phil Joy.
