OLDHAM RL Club chairman Chris Hamilton has revealed that several of St Helens’ first-team players will feature in Friday’s pre-season friendly at Whitebank.

The Super League outfit informed Roughyeds of their intention to field several high-profile members of their squad, as preparations for next month’s competitive action move up several gears.

Following the cancellation of the Law Cup meeting with Rochdale Hornets, Tony Benson’s Oldham side belatedly got their warm-up under way with a 22-22 draw at Whitehaven on Sunday, which saw them retain the SEAT Trophy.

The outing left Benson satisfied, but Hamilton admitted the hosts will have to be at their best to cope with the challenge awaiting them at 8pm on Friday.

He said: “I was delighted when St Helens told me that a number of senior players will feature at Whitebank on Friday night.

“Hopefully the supporters are excited by the prospect of seeing some familiar Super League faces.

“Obviously it is a big ask to go up against some of their full-time professionals, despite the fact we have several experienced players at the club.

“But it is going to be a good test for us and we are going to field a strong team.”

Should the St Helens bus driver need directions on Friday, he should look no further than two of the club’s bright prospects who have been told they will figure in the game.

Scrum-half Danny Yates (16), who played for Waterhead at junior level, is learning his trade at the Langtree Park club’s academy.

And 18-year-old forward Joe Greenwood, who came through the ranks at Saddleworth Rangers and is the younger brother of Wigan’s James Greenwood, is also hoping to catch the eye on his return to the area.

Hamilton added: “I think it is great that both Oldham lads will be playing against us on Friday.

“Apparently Joe has been highly impressive in pre-season so I am sure they are looking for more of the same from him in this fixture.”
