Cup cheer for Oldham in Barrow blitz

Oldham 26, Barrow 14
OLDHAM swept into the last 16 of the Carnegie Challenge Cup thanks to a fabulous Whitebank second half that overwhelmed Barrow Raiders.

The Cumbrians came determined to avenge their 32-26 defeat here a fortnight ago, but left empty handed once again as Roughyeds triumphed 26-14.

This fourth-round tie was just as exciting and intense as the league game with Tony Benson's men going 14-0 down inside half an hour before hauling themselves back from the brink.

Barrow boss Darren Holt brought a side showing no fewer than seven changes, including himself at stand-off half.

But as well as Holt masterminded Barrow's early dominance, the Raiders were powerless to stop Oldham's near-perfect second-half victory march which yielded tries for Paul Noone, Matthew Fogarty and Miles Greenwood.

Tactically, Oldham didn't put a foot wrong. The pack produced an inspirational performance in the second half, with Chris Clarke, Jason Boults, Valu Bentley, David Ellison and young Matty Syron pushing forward up the middle and Noone doing a fine job further wide on the right.
