Roughyeds swoop for Holroyd
Date published: 19 April 2012
OLDHAM RL Club have signed former Super League star Graham Holroyd — and up-and-coming young forward Jamie Acton.
Stand-off Holroyd (36) will go straight into Tony Benson’s plans for Sunday’s Championship One game at London Skolars.
He comes on a short-term deal to replace injured skipper Neil Roden.
Acton (19), a Londoner released by Wigan Warriors, will make his Roughyeds debut in the reserves against Sheffield Eagles at Whitebank tonight (8pm) after signing a contract to November 30.
Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton said: “We have done a deal with Graham to see us through while Neil is out and then we will re-assess it.
“Graham has already identified areas in which he can help us. In Neil’s absence, he is just the sort of vastly experienced player we need.”
Acton, a relative newcomer, made an immediate impact at Hemel Stags and was selected for the Great Britain under-18s side.
He turned in a man-of-the-match performance which aroused Wigan’s attention.
“I’m buzzing about starting this new chapter,” he said. “I was looking for a part-time contract and I had heard lots of good things about Oldham, so here I am.
Tickets for the Roughyeds’ fifth-round Carnegie Challenge Cup tie against St Helens at Langtree Park on Friday, April 27, will be on sale at Whitebank tonight.
