Benson hails cup-tie support
Date published: 30 April 2012
OLDHAM coach Tony Benson was thankful for the excellent turn-out at St Helens, which is set to provide the club with a welcome cash boost.
The Carnegie Challenge Cup fifth-round tie, won 76-0 by the Super League giants, was played as a Roughyeds ‘home’ tie at Langtree Park.
And with a crowd of 5,746 present, the ultimate result of the split-gate contest should make itself felt long after the match is forgotten.
“Nobody works as hard as chairman Chris Hamilton does and if it helps him balance the books then I am really happy for him,” said Benson of his chairman.
“The support we got from the Saints fans was phenomenal, coming out in numbers as they did.
“We really appreciated that. It means a lot to a club like ours. It is hard to make ends meet now in Championship One and you just struggle your way through a season.
“A game like this one, where people support it and get behind us, makes a massive difference.
“As a club, we just can’t thank everyone enough.”
