Half-back seeks pastures new

Date published: 08 May 2012

OLDHAM RL have released young half-back Jack Reid at the player’s request.

The former Widnes Vikings player made a couple of first-team appearances in pre-season and Northern Rail Cup games, but has not figured at senior level since.

When Neil Roden was injured at Rochdale on Good Friday, hooker Danny Whitmore filled in until the arrival of 36-year-old Graham Holroyd on a short-term contract.

Reid even played his last couple of reserve-team games at hooker, while Craig Noon and Tommy Connick occupied the half-back spots.

“Jack wanted to go because he didn’t see a first-team opportunity opening up for him, so we have granted his request,” said Roughyeds chief Chris Hamilton.

Meanwhile, unlucky prop Luke Stenchion has been hit by a new injury.

He broke a thumb at Whitehaven in pre-season and was out for three months. It has since emerged that he broke a hand in the pre-match warm-up before going on for two spells.

Coach Tony Benson, meanwhile, is recovering from a virus which grounded him last week when his No 2, Martin Roden, took charge of the first team.

The reserves are at home to Keighley Cougars on Thursday, kick-off 7.45pm.

The Junction, Ripponden Road, will provide free transport to Whitebank, leaving at 6.45pm, but bookings must be received before 10pm tomorrow on (0161) 633 2759.
