Individual errors cost us — Benson
Date published: 28 May 2012
OLDHAM boss Tony Benson blamed individual mistakes for the 35-30 defeat by South Wales Scorpions — the Roughyeds’ fourth Championship One defeat in the last four outings during May.
Uncharacteristic errors by Miles Greenwood, who otherwise had another top game, and John Gillam, in his first outing for 11 weeks, gifted Scorpions 12 points, while another blunder by debut-making on-loan winger Chris Holroyde led up to the Welsh side’s decisive try by Steve Parry 12 minutes from the end.
Benson said: “Without those mistakes, and others, the scoreline would have looked different altogether and we would have got a good result. Simple as that.
“Anyone can make them, but the fact remains that it was individual mistakes that killed us.
"When that happens, the other 16 blokes can’t do anything about it and that’s what is so frustrating.
“We were not outplayed or out-enthused, but at crucial stages when we had a chance to get on top we would lose the ball or give away a penalty.”
