Miles in Batley move

OLDHAM RL Club’s failure to win promotion has cost them the services of this season’s top try scorer, Miles Greenwood.

The 25-year-old full-back, outstanding in the Championship One campaign that ended in play-off defeat at Workington on Sunday, has signed for Batley Bulldogs on a one-year deal.

His intention was always to have one season only in the sport’s third tier — and as Roughyeds finished sixth, two places outside the promotion qualifiers, he was denied the option of going up with his home-town club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my season at Whitebank,” said Oldham-born Greenwood. “The only reason I’m moving on is to get back into the Championship.

“I can only speak well of the Oldham club, players and fans. Playing for a club on my doorstep was a new experience for me, and I loved it. It’s different and it’s special.

“It was bitterly disappointing to lose like we did at Workington. We were so close to pulling it off. It was an awful way to go, but that’s life.”

Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton paid tribute to Greenwood’s commitment and all-round contribution.

He added: “Miles was only available to us in the first place due to an unusual set of circumstances.

“In terms of consistency, he was our stand-out player over the full season, playing well even when we were struggling.”
