Hamilton attracted by ‘sheer will to win’
Date published: 21 September 2012
OLDHAM RL Club chairman Chris Hamilton was swayed by new coach Scott Naylor’s rugby league philosophy when concluding the search for Tony Benson’s successor.
After two meetings spanning several hours, the work ethic former Bradford and England man Naylor promised to instill in the players was one of the key factors in his appointment.
“Scott told me he was never the most talented player in any of the sides for which he played,” said Hamilton.
“But what he lacked in natural ability he more than made up for with his sheer will to win.
“This is a man who simply never knew when he was beaten. He sets very high standards and he expects the players here to live up to them.”
Hamilton was also happy with Naylor’s reaction to a frank and honest discussion, in which the new arrival was made aware of the financial reality at Whitebank.
“I told Scott about the ins and outs of coaching here, the fact there are part-time players, the way the facilities are and the teams we will face in this division. He is going into this challenge with eyes wide open.”
