New job, new life for Marriott

OLDHAM RL have signed their 19th, and youngest, member of their 2013 squad: Rochdale-based Callum Marriott - full-time contract player lat year at Salford City Reds.

The 19 year old has already sampled Super League, having played off the bench in Salford’s 34-18 win against Hull KR at The Willows in 2011 when he was still over two months short of his 18th birthday.

Marriott played for Salford’s under-20s team under the watchful eye of coach Lee Spencer, now the No 2 at Whitebank.

“It will be good to link up again with Spanner (Spencer),” said the teenager. “I was full-time at the City Reds, so I need a job now. New club, new job, new life. I’m looking forward to it.”

No one has charted his fledgling career more closely than Spencer.

Head coach Scott Naylor’s right-hand man said of Marriott: “He has bags of potential. He’s young, powerful and physical. Nothing worries him.”

Naylor, Spencer and club chairman Chris Hamilton talked to the players at Whitebank last night about the challenges of the season ahead and what will be expected of members of the squad.

Naylor said afterwards: “It went well. I can’t wait to get cracking now.”
