Roughyeds are Village people for the day

OLDHAM RL Club’s final training session of 2014 was a day out to Leigh Sports Village.

Having already trained twice in the top-class facilities of new Super League partner club Huddersfield Giants, Roughyeds were delighted to accept an invitation to hit the road for a third time and work out at coach Scott Naylor’s hometown club yesterday.

The Oldham party, under the command of assistant boss Lee Spencer, spent several hours at Leigh where they did Olympic-style power lifting in the Village’s state-of-the-art gymnasium and then went out on the nearby Leigh East pitch for w workout against Leigh’s powerful first-team squad.

Spencer said: “Paul Rowley and his staff were terrific hosts, giving us everything we asked for and looking after us superbly. We asked for a full-contact session and Leigh’s aggression was exactly what we needed. It was an eye-opener for some of our younger players but we scored two good tries, learned a lot and the experience was extremely beneficial.”

The squad will get a few days off for New Year, reconvening next Tuesday evening to begin the build-up to three pre-season games in February at Swinton, Leigh and Barrow.
