Wolves lying in wait

A PLUM home tie against Warrington Wolves is the reward for Oldham’s stunning victory at Hull KR.

The last-16 Challenge Cup tie pits Scott Naylor’s Championship side — who produced one of the competition’s all-time shocks in winning 36-22 at the Lightstream Stadium in round five — against the eight-time winners, who currently top Super League.

After the draw was made on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning, Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton is hopeful that the game against a side packed with international stars will prove very attractive for supporters.

“It is clearly a great tie for us and just reward for what was an amazing effort in the last round,” said Hamilton (pictured, below).

“Warrington are going great guns this season and hopefully it will attract a very good crowd.

“It represents another massive challenge for Scott Naylor and the players and the way they were all buzzing after Saturday and looking forward to the draw, it is a game they will relish.

“We also know that it is a difficult challenge, with Warrington at the other end of the Super League table.”

Three of the eight ties will now be selected for television coverage, two on the BBC and one on Sky, with ticketing arrangements to be completed over the coming days.

Ahead of the cup tie, Naylor’s giant-killers face a St George’s Day trip to Whitehaven (Saturday, 6.30pm kick-off) and a May Day clash with Featherstone Rovers at Bower Fold on Sunday week (3pm) — two important games in the club’s bid to consolidate in the Championship at the first attempt.

At the Recreation Ground on Saturday they go head to head with three of their former players in James Coyle (head coach), his younger brother Thomas (hooker or half-back) and back-row forward Dave Allen.

James scored 37 tries in 51 games for Roughyeds between 2007 and 2009 while Thomas ran in 15 tries in 26 outings in 2009.

These are heady, happier days for Oldham who will go to Cumbria on Saturday in search of their fourth win in a row after claiming the scalps of Batley Bulldogs and Sheffield Eagles in the Championship and of Super League outfit Hull KR in the Challenge Cup.
