Werneth top despite defeat

WERNETH remain leaders of the CLL under-18 Whittaker Cup despite losing at Rochdale in the battle of the top two. But with only two points separating the top four teams with one match left, the title race could not be more compelling.

Rochdale, who along with the Coppice club have 30 points, made 189 for seven against Werneth who were dismissed for 133. Werneth stay top by virtue of securing more victories.

Royton dented the title challenge of third-placed Heywood with an exciting five-run victory at The Paddock. Royton scored 145 for nine before bowling out the Crimble club for 140, Danny Pawson making 50 not out.

Crompton suffered a six-wicket home defeat by Clifton. They made 113 for eight, Dominic Navsi scoring 51 not out but Clifton easily reached their target making 114 for four.

Oldham suffered a 95-run home defeat by Walsden who made 198 for four before dismissing The Pollards side for 103.

The final round of games, postponed due to delayed Wood Cup and Burton Cup ties, will be played between August 19/21.

BAD weather has impacted on the Saddleworth and District Cricket League’s under-13s fixture programme this season.

They have two outstanding Peak Trophy matches to play, and these will be held in early August.

AUSTERLANDS will have home advantage when they lock horns with Saddleworth in the final of this season’s under-17s Romida Trophy.

The match, on Sunday, September 13, is of 40 overs per side (start 1.30pm).

LEWIS Ralph returned superb figures of five for 10 as Greenfield under-15s defeated Hyde in the Lancashire County League.

The teenager’s efforts meant the Ladhill Lane outfit needed only 75 to win, and they reached their target with four wickets to spare.

The club’s under-11s, meanwhile, are 10 points clear at the top of the north division in the Tameside and District League.

They are waiting to discover who their opponents will be from the southern section in the play-offs.

Glossop are currently leading the way, with Denton West, Denton St Lawrence and Hyde scrapping it out for second place.

A FEW places are still available on Ben Johnson’s Summer School at Greenfield.

It starts on Monday, August 4, and is for players in school Years Five, Six, Seven and Eight. The cost is £45 for the week.
