Mixed fortunes for Waterhead
Date published: 15 October 2008
IN a fiercely-fought contest, Waterhead under-13s overcame Leyland 18-10 thanks to tries from Alex Fallon (two), Reece Jones and Nathan Mason.
But the under-16s were edged out 12-10 by West Bank Bears in division three of the North-West Counties League.
Jordan Hanley and Sam Reynolds touched down, but both conversions were missed as Waterhead suffered their fourth defeat of the season.
Anthony Miller kicked a goal to make up the tally.
Tattersall try is pick as Rangers go top
SADDLEWORTH Rangers under-16s reached the summit of division two in the North-West Counties League after 26-10 win at Hindley.
Strong in defence, they always held the upperhand over their hosts from Wigan.
Michael Tattersall’s length-of-the-field effort was the pick of the five tries, with the others coming from Nathan Jewitt, Tommy Smith, Sam Wilson and Lewis Hough. Man-of-the-match Tattersall and Joe Greenwood added the conversions.
The under-15s eased into the second round of the Lancashire Cup with an emphatic 44-8 win over a depleted Culceth Eagles team.
Rangers ran in nine tries, which included excellent solo efforts from Luke Du Feu, Chris Yarwood and Andrew Salt.
Other try scorers were Du Feu again, Nathan Shaw-Langhorn, Jordan Arundale, Jacob Mayer, Sam Rhodes and James Maude.
Du Feu added three conversions and Shaw-Langhorn one.
The under-14s made a great start against Ince Rose Bridge — man-of-the-match Ross Hansford touched down after eight minutes — but they paid the penalty for a series of mistakes as they went down 26-22.
Conceding three first-half tries, they trailed 16-10 at the break. Ben White got the other Rangers score which he converted.
The visitors knocked on eight times in the second and soon found themselves 26-10 in arrears.
A Ryan Maneely try and White conversion reduced the deficit.
And a Jack Connor effort put Rangers within touching distance of Bridge’s score but, with the clock ticking down, Rangers could not come up with the match-winning score.
Two superb tries from Tom Jowle were in vain as the under-11s went down 30-12 at Latchford.
Ali Hassan, James Adams and man-of-the-match Tom Brisk, for his excellent running with the ball and tackling, stood out for Rangers. Brisk also kicked two goals.
In a low-scoring game, the under-nines came out on top three tries to two against Chorley Panthers.
Josh Molloy, Nathan Roebuck and Matt Fletcher touched down for Rangers, for whom Matt Tetlow was named boy-of-the-match.
The under-eights, with three tries from Ben Forster, were 7-2 winners against local rivals Waterhead by
Boy-of-the-match captain Tom Healey, Josh Yarwood and Elijah Wolstenholme (two) also touched down.
OLDHAM St Anne’s climbed to the top of the under-18s table after an outstanding 34-0 win at Wigan St Jude’s.
The forwards, who was superb in attack, laid the foundations for the success.
But the under-13s, like all teams before them this season, were unable to register a try against Wigan St Patrick’s, who ran out 46-0 winners.
Saints were well-served by Zak Kolakowski, Kyle Winterbottom, Callan Whittaker, Kyle Saunders and Andrew Hughes.
And the under-10s were handed a harsh lesson in defence by an impregnable Wigan St Pats outfit, who ran in 48 unanswered points.
Great endeavour was shown by Harry Akeroyd, Cameron Molloy, Jamie Kelly and Nathan Done, while Thomas Armstrong was named boy of the match.
Tries from Asa France, Alfie Baldwin, Danny Fish, Ben Ivell (two), Ethan Chiappe (two) and Thomas Barnes (two) ensured the under-eights returned to winning ways against Chorley Panthers, who were restricted to four scores.
HIGGINSHAW Eagles under-14s matched their opponents Rylands in a fast and physical first half, which also featured defence of a high standard.
The second period followed in much the same vein, but it was Rylands who clinched an 8-0 win with two unconverted tries.
A fine Higginshaw move — the ball went through five pairs of hands starting from inside their own half — came to end just short of the line.
