COMING THROUGH: Waterhead under-16s Jordan Hanley faces up to the Bank Quay Bulls line after receiving a pass on the run.
A CRUSHING 54-0 away-day win over Cadishead Rhinos cemented Saddleworth Rangers under-15s’ position at the top of division three in the North-West Counties League.
Early in the first half Rangers could have been accused of overplaying against a developing Cadishead side, but once settled they racked up the points with some powerful play in the forwards and expansiveness on the back of it.
Chris Yarwood was the top individual, scoring four tries while showcasing strong running throughout, while Christian Johnson bagged a pair of scores, his first for the club.
Other scorers were Liam Wilcock, Kurtis Smith, Jordan Arundale, Sam Rhodes and Luke Du Feu.
Du Feu (three), Nathan Shaw-Langhorn and Arundale added conversions on a day in which the defence was also strong.
Rangers under-nines came away from their trip to face Wigan St Patrick’s with a creditable draw.
In a gritty, mud-spattered game, Saddleworth settled early and went two tries up thanks to top tackler Matt Fletcher’s double.
Wigan came back strongly to take a 3-2 lead as the teams changed ends and went further ahead soon after.
The visitors were unbowed, Kristian Hilton powering over to score, before another try for the home side made it 5-3.
Rangers kept going though and, after man-of-the-match Guy Edwards had run through a number of tackles to touch down, Fletcher completed his hat-trick to level it up.
Rangers under-eights also picked up a point — but only after a superb comeback.
Chorley had raced into a four-try lead before the local outfit managed to get on the scoresheet through Adam Howarth.
After half-time, Rangers pulled level with tries from Ben Forster and Josh Yarwood and another from Howarth.
A further two tries were scored by each team, with man-of-the-match Forster going in again for rangers, as the game ended at six tries apiece.
A THIRD win of the season for Waterhead under-16s helped lift the side to a mid-table spot in division three of the North-West Counties League.
Bank Quay Bulls were beaten 44-10 on their own patch, with the visitors’ scores coming through Jordan Hanley (three), Jordan Curtis, Ashley Caveney and Niall Dunnington-Wallace.
Anthony Mellor went over for two tries in the second half and also kicked six conversions.
Will Dickinson scored four tries and weighed in with the first-in-the-tackle count of 25 to win the man-of-the-match award for Waterhead under-nines, who won by six tries to five at Leyland.
Things started badly for the visitors, who conceded twice in the first five minutes, but thereafter Waterhead began to play some excellent rugby. Dane Taylor was first in for his 13th of the season and Keegan Brennan then tied the scores at two touch downs each.
The rest of the game belonged to Dickinson, while James Perks was given the coaches award for an excellent attacking display and Dane Taylor the best tackler for a series of copybook leg tackles.Honours even
BEN Jackson claimed the man-of-the-match award for Shaw Rhinos under-15s, who drew 12-12 at Hindley.
Also outstanding on the day were Luke Bentley and Joseph Chambers, in the latter’s first match for the club.
Huddersfield and District Junior League
3D DYNAMOS under-13s made smooth progress into round two of the Huddersfield and District Junior League Cup with an emphatic 14-2 defeat of Brighouse ‘B’.
On the mark were Andy Marsden (three), Elliot Fielding (three) Matt Ralph (three), Alex Kelly (two), Will Linney (two) and Ricky Hall.
