OLDHAM Athletic Girls under-13s showed a terrific attitude to defeat Heyside Angels Clarets 4-3 on penalties in the Oldham Girls League Knock-out Cup.
Behind to a Sarah Hardman goal, they bounced back to restore parity through Jessica Bevan’s long-range effort, and then went in front when Natalya Smythe scored with 10 minutes to go.
Oldham looked on course to claim victory, but Heyside would not lie down and Beth Mellor equalised with only 60 seconds left on the clock.
Stunned by the last-gasp leveller, Oldham regrouped in extra time and the game went to penalties.
And, with Smythe, Lois Daniels, Abbie Porter and Bethany Ward successful in the shoot-out, Oldham went through.
Hats off to Park
CHADDERTON Park under-nines are following in the footsteps of the Royal Family and the Prime Minister — by being pictured on their own Christmas cards.
The youngsters, who play in the North Bury Junior League, are featured wearing Father Christmas hats.
Coach Craig Simpson explained: “We send out a signed team photograph to thank all our sponsors, the secretary of the league and news outlets who print our match reports.
“This year we thought we’d try to put a smile on a few peoples’ faces by adding the Father Christmas hats.
“We are currently building new changing rooms at Chadderton Fold and some local builders have offered their services to keep the building costs down — so they’ve received a Christmas card as well!”
Chadderton Park, who picked up the Manchester County FA fair play award for the second year running, and are in contention for the league title.
