BEN White scored a hat-trick of tries and kicked five goals to propel rampant his Saddleworth School side to the North-West regional final of the Carnegie Champions Schools tournament.
Having beaten opponents Cowley (St Helens) 42-4 in the semi-final, Saddleworth’s crack Year Nine team now face William Beaumont (Warrington) at Robin Park, Wigan, in the final on Tuesday, February 10 (5.30pm).
The team is searching for a third successive North-West title.
In addition to White’s heroics, Ryan Maneely also notched a hat-trick of tries with the other scores coming from Chris Bolton and John Casson.
Few are expecting an easy task in the final, though, against improving opposition who are coached by Warrington legend Jon Clarke.
SADDLEWORTH Rangers under-11s beat Crosfields 28-18 in a game played out in arctic conditions.
Rangers got the first score, man-of-the-match Ali Hassan powering over for his first-ever try, before Tom Jowle increased the lead.
Crosfields responded just before half-time to make the score 8-6 and the match continued to be tit-for-tat up until the scores became 18-18.
Rangers’ second-half tries came from Lewis Adams, Sam Ogden, Daniel Holmes, and a second from Jowle secured victory for Rangers.
Brilliant defending by Travis Holden and a splendid performance by newcomer Kyle Clegg were the highlights in this memorable match for Saddleworth.
Jed Mawdsley led the way for Rangers under-13s in their 52-0 romp at Rylands Tiger Sharks, the team’s biggest win of the season.
Mawdsley claimed a hat-trick of touchdowns, with Dominic Elkin (two), Sebastian Leech (two), Cameron Whitley, Jordan Buin and James Fowles all weighing in with tries. Cameron Matthews helped himself to six conversions.
Meanwhile, Rangers under-14s made it through to the third round of the BARLA National Cup with a 54-0 win over Queensbury.
Ryan Maneely and Lewis Galbraith both claimed hat-tricks, Ben White picked up two tries and six conversions, man-of-the-match Jack Connor weighed in with a brace of touch downs and Jack Leigh added a conversion.
England honours for St Anne’s pair — see picture
OLDHAM St Anne’s duo Daniel Bridge and Kristian Bell have been called up to the England Schools’ under-16s squad for games against France this Easter on Saturday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 14.
Both players are with Oldham St Anne’s
Bell currently trains with St Helens, while Bridge — brother of Warrington’s Chris — is with Wigan.
Higgy’s away-day joy
HIGGINSHAW under-14s produced a superb team performance to beat Latchford Albion 30-4 away from home.
Seven tries arrived through Elliott White (two), Ryan Standring (two), Luke Heap, Patrick Fitzsimmons and jack Hughes, who also kicked one conversion.
The Eagles produced another superb defensive effort to limit Latchford to only one try.
The pack ran with purpose throughout, while the backs showing plenty of class and speed.
