WATER POLO is enjoying a revival in the town with youngsters from Royton leading the way.

Royton Amateur Swimming & Water Polo Club has won the Manchester and District League at under-14 level having lost only one match throughout the season.

They also have the league’s two leading scorers as Matt Flint has scored 41 goals and Elliot Chadderton 30.

The under-16s have also had a successful season finishing runners-up in the Manchester & District League.

Royton’s Will Salt, with 28 goals, is the league’s leading scorer at this age level.

Royton have two Great Britain junior internationals in the club. Ella Chadderton plays for the under-16s and coaches the under-14s and Joe O’Regan who coaches the under-16s having played for them until recently.

Royton are currently looking for young players of all ages. They have under-14 and 16 teams and are also looking to form under-12 and under-18 sides.

The water-polo teams train at Royton Baths on Friday (7pm-8pm) and Sunday (1pm-2.30pm). Anybody can attend for a trial and further details are available from Michelle Flint (07590 027188).

Royton used to have one of the countries top senior water-polo teams and also dominated the scene locally.

The club’s illustrious history spans almost a century though, sadly, the water polo section folded some years ago after many of their players left to join Manchester.

Phil Higgins has since helped relaunch water polo and the club has an exciting group of young players who are starting to make a splash.
