Oldham Chronicle Cup
WATERHEAD under-15s gained revenge over league rivals Oldham St Anne’s, lifting the Chronicle Cup with a 28-10 victory.
Despite being runners-up in division one to St Anne’s, Waterhead have now won two of the three games played out between the sides in what has become a compelling rivalry.
Saints opened the scoring with a fine length-of-field try, before two efforts from man-of-the-match Josh Johnson, both converted by Ben Whitehead, put Waterhead in command, 12-4 up at the interval.
Daniel Yates and Adam Steeple then went over to take their side further ahead at 24-4, both converted by Whitehead, and though Anne’s got one back a Jack Cooke try polished the game off and gave Waterhead a deserved win.
THE under-14s final saw Saddleworth Rangers overcome the challenge of Higginshaw 46-4.
Danny Richardson opened the scoring and Lewis Galbraith then touched down the first of two quick-fire efforts, the second of which was converted from out wide by man-of-the-match Ben White.
Ryan Maneely was next over off Josh Bradbury’s clever kick, before Higginshaw full-back Jamie Mayall responded through an effort in the corner to make it 20-4 at half-time.
Maneely was next over for Saddleworth, sprinting 70 yards to touch down and White then chipped over the top, re-gathered his kick, touched down under the posts and converted his own effort.
White then went over for another try he also converted, putting Saddleworth 36-4 up, with further efforts from Richardson and Chris Bolton, both added to by White goals, rounding off the scoring.
WITH the North-West Counties division three title secured several weeks ago, Saddleworth Rangers completed a league and cup double with a 22-10 triumph over arch-rivals Oldham St Anne’s in the under-13s final.
Connor Casey was first over for Saints, Ashley Forde converting, but in a keenly-contested game Sebastian Leech replied by forcing his way over in the right corner.
Harry Wallace then put Rangers ahead for the first time and the sides changed ends with he score at 8-6.
Saddleworth went further ahead when man-of-the-match Dominic Elkin outpaced the Saints defence before touching down.
To their credit, St Anne’s refused to let heads drop and Jack Marsden’s effort midway through the second period reduced his side’s deficit to just two points at 12-10.
Leech then grabbed his second of the day and with only a few minutes left, Jed Mawdesley’s try and a Cameron Matthews conversion made it safe for Saddleworth.
THE under-16s final was won by Saddleworth Rangers, whose man-of-the-match in a 60-8 victory over Waterhead was Sam Wilson.
Saddleworth in last four
SADDLEWORTH School’s Year Nines progressed to the last four of the Carnegie Champions Schools’ competition for the third successive year with a straightforward 60-10 victory over St Augustine’s of Redditch in the blazing sun at Churchill playing fields.
A hat-trick each from captain Ben White — who kicked all 10 of his conversions attempts — and hooker Ryan Maneely led the way for Saddleworth, who built a lead of 18-4 at half-time.
After the break, the opposition tired and further scores arrived for Scott Booth, Harry Ripley, John Casson and a long-range debut effort from Laurie England.
Saddleworth now face a tough task against Castleford High School tomorrow (3pm at Hopwood Hall) in the semi-finals of the competition.
Jobson’s treble boosts Saints
ALEX Jobson scored a hat-trick to help Oldham St Anne’s win the North-West Counties under-12s development plate on finals day at Blackpool.
Jobson’s treble formed part of the 34-0 scoreline against Portico Vine of St Helens, but the basis of the triumph was a strong defence.
After holding form in the first half, strong work after the interval from the forwards and good ball movement from half-backs Luke Skilling and Jack Morrison and loose forward Sam Akeroyd allowed centres Ryan Lynch and Jobson to make use of the wide pitch.
Other try scorers on the day for St Anne’s were man-of-the-match Lynch (two), Kieran Spencer and Akeroyd, with Paul Ainsworth adding three conversions.
Other results — Under-10s: Oldham St Anne’s 28 (Tries: Owen Baldwin, Idris Tamghart, Haider Khan, Regan Croft, Cameron Molloy. Goals: Baldwin, Khan, Croft, Molloy), Newton Storm 0.
Under-eights: Oldham St Anne’s two tries (Samuel Jewitt, Ben Ivell), Newton Storm six tries.
