Batsmen show way as Shield holders progress
HOLDERS Shaw ‘A’ under-15s overcame Uppermill in a repeat of last season’s Leicester Shield final in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
Taking first knock in the second-round tie, Shaw posted an impressive 164 for three thanks to a fine 50 from Drew Fullalove (retired), Michael Smith’s unbeaten 33 and a quickfire 32 from Joe Burgoyne, which included seven fours.
Uppermill were always struggling to keep up with the run-rate and were eventually bowled out for 98. James Crowther top-scored with 40.
Jack Poxon, with three for nine from four overs, was the pick of the bowlers.
Austerlands defeated Glodwick by 13 runs at Thorpe Lane to take their place in the last four of the knock-out competition.
Andrew Cadd retired on 50 as Austerland’s reached 142 for four, with Glodwick closing on 129 for seven. Thomas Hindley compiled 38.
The fixture between Saddleworth ‘A’ v Bamford Fieldhouse was a victim of the weather and will be rescheduled, while the league are still waiting to hear the outcome of the Staley v Droylsden tie.
The semi-finals will be played on Thursday, July 2.
