Inter-League woe as Colts slip to defeat

MICHAEL BIRD and Dominic Gill shared six wickets, but they were unable to prevent the Saddleworth and District Cricket League losing their opening group game in this season’s Inter-League Colts Trophy competition.

Bird, of Uppermill, took three for 20 and also top-scored with 29 in the two-wicket defeat by the Bolton League at Austerlands’ Thorpe Lane ground.

The Saddleworth League were bowled out for 111 which, after being 39 for six at one stage, was something of a recovery.

A Ghouse did the damage for the Bolton League, claiming five for 10 from seven overs.

The hosts were grateful to Bird and Shaw all-rounder Adam Good, who hit 28 coming in at number nine.

Gill, of Greenfield, removed both openers before eventually finishing with three for 20 from nine overs while captain, Saddleworth’s Steve Taylor, claimed one for six in seven accurate overs.

But a fine 54 for A Lane steered the Bolton League to within one run of victory with four wickets remaining.

They lost their seventh wicket going for glory but, believing a win was imminent, the remaining batsmen had got changed.

Almost four minutes elapsed before the new batter emerged from the pavilion — only to be timed out by the umpires.

The visitors survived a couple of loud lbw appeals and it was 11 nervous balls before they scrambled over the finishing line.

The Saddleworth League’s next group game is away to the Lancashire County League on Sunday, July 12.
