Ben shows nerves of steel in thriller

BEN McKAIGG smashed four off the last ball to seal a dramatic win for Shaw ‘B’ in the under-15s division of the Saddleworth and District Cricket League.

The youngster stepped up to the plate as his side chased down Glodwick’s score of 90 for six.

James Mitchell impressed with both bat and ball — he hit 40 in reply — but it required McKaigg’s cool head to guide Shaw over the winning line.

Heyside still lead the way by two points after an emphatic defeat of Uppermill.

After restricting the hosts to 79 all out, openers James Lord (33) and Daniel Robertson (30) stood firm to clinch a 10-wicket win.

Shaw ‘A’ bounced back from their first defeat of the season to record a comprehensive victory over Saddleworth ‘B’.

Tom Rowlands retired on an excellent 50 and Elliott Birtwistle made 41 in a formidable total of 162 for four from 20 overs.

In reply, tight bowling from the front-line strikeforce of Drew Fullalove and Jack Poxon meant Saddleworth were always behind the run-rate.

The Well-i-Hole outfit completed their overs on 85 for four, with Tom Woolley carrying his bat for an unbeaten 33.

Saddleworth ‘A’, in third place, posted 134 for four after they made the short trip to Stayley.

The home side were never on terms and were bowled out for 60.

Gareth Bardsley returned impressive figures of four for three off two overs as Heyside ‘B’ dismissed Moorside for 48.

The hosts lost three wickets before reaching their goal.

Droylsden were unable to raise a team against Bamford Fieldhouse, who claimed the points.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on the two Leicester Shield semi-final ties tomorrow night.

Stayley play host to Shaw ‘A’, while Austerlands are at home to the winners of the Saddleworth ‘A’ v Bamford Fieldhouse quarter-final, which took place last night.
