Avro hopeful of better to come

AVRO Juniors are looking to build on last season’s success which brought them a bundle of silverware.

The highlight was the under-12s’ victory in the County Cup final, but the club are hoping 2009/2010 will be even better.

They are fielding seven teams, ranging from under-sevens to an under-19s side, who will play in the Tameside Sunday Intermediate League.

Last season’s under-12s, who beat Medlock Rangers 1-0 thanks to a Joel Murray goal to lift the County Cup, also finished runners-up in the East Manchester Junior League and reached the final of the Primary Cup, which was never played.

The under-13s won the East Manchester Junior League and cup competitions, a feat matched by Avro’s under-17s.

The under-10s, meanwhile, came second in the East Manchester Junior Mini-Soccer League.

Robert Fuller, who was in charge of the County Cup-winning side, said: “The junior section at Avro was first set up in 1989, but we only had two junior teams three years ago.

“We are now up to seven and we are starting an under-sixes side in September in preparation for the season after.

“We’re getting bigger and stronger all the time and the hope is that some of the players will eventually play senior football for Avro in years to come.”

Avro, who boast the Charter Standard Award, are also eyeing a tilt at the Manchester League premier division title.

They finished sixth last season — a good effort after an indifferent start — and won the Manchester FA Challenge Trophy after a 2-0 win over Curzon Ashton reserves.o CRAIG SIMPSON, from Chadderton Park FC, has become an FA level two coach.

He is the seventh coach at the club to hold this status, following on from Mark Beddall, Andy Mason, Frank Nolan, Mark Lengden, Frank Lynch and Steve Lynch.
