LOCAL swimmer Mickey Thompson has made a splash on the world stage as he continues his quest to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Paralympics.
The 14-year-old, who was representing Oldham Aquatics, captured five gold medals at the fifth World Dwarf Games which were held in Belfast.
Mickey, who trains five times each week with Oldham Community Leisure’s Advanced Training Squad, won the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m and 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
“It was the first time Mickey has competed in the World Games and he exceeded expectations as we never imagined he would win five golds,” explained proud dad Darrell.
Mickey, who suffers from the hereditary growth disorder achondroplasia, has previously enjoyed considerable success in national events over the last four years and has also competed in the European championships.
