SADDLEWORTH became the fifth different name on the Chronicle Schools Golf Challenge trophy when they claimed a two-point victory at Werneth.
No school has won the trophy twice but it looked for a long time as though Crompton House would be retaining the title.
They had two teams on 79 points but Saddleworth came into the frame when brothers Daniel and Sam Lyness notched 44 points with an impressive 24 back nine that included a chip-in birdie three at the tough 17th that proved decisive.
Then, in the final fourball, Tom Woolley and Tom Ansell made a par down the last to register 37 points for a 81 team total.
That tally pushed the Crompton House 1 team of Max Sherrif and Robert Barker (42) and Jack Fallows and Alex Boyden (37) for a 79 team score into second.
The Crompton House 2 team of Bradley Canning and Jordan Abbott (44) and Ryan O’Leary and Tom Hicklin (35) had to settle for third on a card-play-off.
Chronicle deputy editor David Whaley is also captain at host-club Werneth and presented the prizes. The event was held at the second time of asking after it was washed out back in July.
