Sweet 16 for ’Head

WATERHEAD under-16s remain in third spot in North-West Counties League Premiership, after defeating Wigan St Patrick’s 16-14 at home.

With a near full-strength squad available for the first time this season, Waterhead started brightly and scored two excellent tries in the first 15 minutes through Johnathan Fouldes and Jack Cooke to take control at 8-0 up.

The visitors came back strongly with a pair of tries of their own and with one converted, took a 10-8 lead into the break.

Waterhead dominated field position and possession in the second half with the kicking game and distribution of half-backs Daniel Yates and Ben Whitehead ably supported by Luke Du Feu at hooker.

The pack made good yards against a crack Wigan outfit with props Chris Yarwood and Brandon Meanock, second rows Nathan Mason and Josh Johnson, and loose forward Aaron Webb working tirelessly.

Yates scored a fine try, converted by Whitehead, to give Waterhead a 14-10 lead before Whitehead struck a penalty to take the score out to 16-10.

The home side then went close again and though St Patrick’s got the last try, it wasn’t enough to affect the result.
