Extra-time woe as under-15s let it slip
Date published: 02 December 2009
FOOTBALL: OLDHAM under-15s are out of the ESFA Inter-Association Trophy after a 5-4 extra-time defeat against Harrogate.
The town team, who held the lead on three occasions, couldn’t shake off their Roses rivals in the third-round tie.
The game took place on the Astroturf at Kaskenmoor School, and Oldham were first to settle on the artificial surface with Carlton MacIntosh (South Chadderton) firing them ahead in the 15th minute.
Harrogate came back strongly and equalised just before the half-hour mark, only for the hosts to hit back immediately with MacIntosh’s second of the game.
Oldham increased their lead five minutes before the break thanks to Matthew Singleton (Crompton House) and, at that stage, the local side were on course for the fourth round.
But Harrogate stormed back after the interval to send the tie into extra time.
Oldham went in front again courtesy of Crompton House’s Tyrell Coley, but Harrogate refused to throw in the towel and restored parity once again.
And it was the North Yorkshire outfit who went through after they grabbed a last-gasp winner.
Oldham under-14s’ Talbot Cup tie against Tameside was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
They are hoping the weather relents for Saturday’s Greater Manchester Schools’ League game against Bury at St Gabriel’s School (kick off 10.30am).
Athletic hold their nerve in spot-kick shoot-out
OLDHAM Athletic Girls under-16s overcame Moston Juniors in a North Manchester Girls League thriller.
All-square at 4-4 in the Knockout Cup tie — Ashlie Ball (two), Keshia Harvey and Chelsea Holden scored for Athletic — they finally prevailed 3-2 in a spot-kick decider.
It wasn’t such good news for Athletic under-11s, who were beaten 6-0 by Heyside Angels Whites, but goals from Abbie O’Brien and Olivia Stagg clinched a 2-0 win for Athletic under-12s against Uppermill also in the Knockout Cup.
Capprice McSharry scored for the under-13s, who succumbed 6-1 to Denton, but Jessica Bevan and Bethany Marland were on mark for the under-14s in a 3-0 defeat of Chadderton Park.
KATIE Lockwood helped herself to four goals as Uppermill under-11s registered a 7-2 win over Heyside Angels Blues.
The hot-shot was backed up by Laura Barlow, who scored twice, and captain Megan Barlow’s stunning long-range strike.
With only six players, the under-13s were up against it from the word go against Chadderton Park, who were seven goals to the good at the interval.
Thanks to Park’s sporting gesture, both sides had the same number of players in the second half, but the damage had been done as ’Mill went on to lose 10-0.
The under-14s relinquished a two-goal lead in the first half against Heyside Angels Blues in the Knockout Cup, but they recovered from the blip to record a thrilling 6-4 win.
Kirsty Ashworth weighed in with a hat-trick, striker Jayme Butler-Jones scored twice and Megan Ashton, with the goal of the game, got the other to book ’Mill’s place in the last four.
