BASKETBALL:
OLDHAM Titans basketball team were beaten 71-59 in the under-18s North-West Conference title showdown against Liverpool at the Kaskenmoor Ball Hall.
Cheered on by a crowd of 150, the local teenagers were on course to clinch top honours at the midway point of the match — they were leading 37-35 — but the Merseysiders hit back to edge ahead after the third quarter.
In front by a point at 47-46, Liverpool upped their performance to create a championship-winning advantage.
But Titans had the satisfaction of finishing as runners-up in the league and claiming a place in the end-of-season play-offs.
They also boasted the leading points scorer on the day in Joel Wolstenholme (35pts) who, along with team-mates Adam Graham and Simon Lloyd, is waiting for a call from the England selectors.
The Titans are away to Huddersfield New College in the play-offs on the weekend of March 27-28.
