RUGBY:

WATERHEAD under-16s put in a below-par performance to exit the North-West Coun-ties Edge Hill Cup at the semi-finals stage, losing 14-6 at home to Golbourne Parkside.

Too many penalties conceded and handling errors aplenty contributed to the defeat against efficient and enthusiastic opposition.

Waterhead, who blew a number of opportunities on a real off-day, scored through a Ben Whitehead try and an Adam Steeple conversion.

But Jordan Hanley scored a hat-trick of tries for Waterhead under-17s, who won 46-18 at Latchford Albion.

Luc Kinder opened the try scoring for the visitors and Hayden Jones, Anthony Mellor and Hanley all followed suit in the first half, Kinder’s solitary goal making the score 18-6 at the midway point of the match.

In the second half, Waterhead increased their advantage thanks to four more goals from Kinder and tries by Niall Dunnington-Wallace, Hanley (two), Mellor and Jack Chadwick.

OLDHAM St Anne’s under-11s won 22-14 at Langworthy Reds.

Saints established a 14-8 lead at half-time through Regan Croft, Oliver Depetrillo and Alex France, Depetrillo converting once.

Joshua Fish and Haider Khan added tries after the break to seal the win, while Jamie Ashton picked up the man-of-the-match award for the visitors.

Sweet smell of success for Rangers

SADDLEWORTH Rangers under-15s bounced back from their disappointing semi-final North-West Counties Cup defeat to record a 40-18 win away at Ince Rose Bridge.

Lewis Galbraith scored Rangers’ first two tries, either side of an Ince score, and Scott Booth and Danny Richardson were next over, Ben White adding a conversion.

The home team pulled a try back to make it 20-8 at half-time, and the only downside to the opening period from a Saddleworth point of view were injuries sustained by Jack Leigh and Harry Ripley.

After conceding again at the start of the half, Rangers scored through man-of-the-match Richardson, Ryan Maneely (two) and Tom Rice, White converting twice before a late Ince consolation.

A 38-4 friendly victory for Rangers under-14s at Widnes Moorfield underlined the credentials of a side on track for the North-West Counties division two title.

Joe Boulter (two), Jed Mawdsley, James Fowles and man-of-the-match Seb Leech (three) got the tries, with Dominic D’Adamo converting five times.

Rangers under-12s excelled themselves in a thrilling and bruising quarter-final tie in the North-West Counties plate competition, winning 26-10 at Shevington Sharks.

Harry Aaronson opened the scoring and man-of-the-match James Adams grabbed the second, capitalising on excellent passing by Fin Wall and Nathan Knowles.

Josh Hall got the third before Shevington pulled one back close to half-time.

Creative play by Jacob Ford opened up a gap for Wall to go over and Hall added another before a late try for the home team.

Fitton Hill Bulldogs under-10s were defeated by Rangers in the big derby game at under-10s level.

Rangers had six different try scorers but the depleted Bulldogs didn’t let their heads drop and battled to the end.

Try scorers were Matt Fletcher, Matt Tetlow, Finn Gallagher, Nathan Roebuck, James Rice and Will Wright. Conversions came from Guy Edwards, Fletcher, Gallagher, Tetlow, Kristian Hilton, Roebuck and Wright.
