JOHN Newell: title hopes
BOXING:
JOHN Newell is setting his sights on the junior ABA 75kg title after producing a superb display in his last-four bout.
The 16-year-old, who fights out of the Ancoats Amateur Boxing Club, swept aside Kettering’s Patrick McGann 11-3 in the last-four bout in Bolton.
The North Chadderton pupil had built up a 5-0 lead by end of the first round. Although McGann broke his scoring duck in round two, he had left himself too much to do and the Oldham boxer ran out a comfortable winner.
Newell, who was a losing semi-finalist 12 months ago, is now counting down to the final, which will take place on the weekend of May 22-23 at the Barnsley Metrodome.
He will go head to head with Andre Rheault, who hails from the Northolt ABC in Middlesex.
