FOOTBALL:

HUNDREDS of people turned out for Springhead AFC’s successful Live4Soccer open day.

All eyes were on the celebrity guests who took part in a 60-minute match.

Stars of the hit television series ‘Shameless’ joined forces with Springhead players and Athletic player Chris Taylor, against several of cast members of Hollyoaks.

And it was members of the long-running soap that edged a tight affair, Jamie Lomas (Warren Fox) notching the winner in a 4-3 victory.

Hosts Springhead won the under-13s tournament, while under-nines glory belonged to Uppermill.

AFC Oldham lifted the Emma Holt memorial trophy in the open age women’s match.

Organiser Lee McAllister said: “We were absolutely delighted to see such a big turnout. Luckily the weather was on our side.

“It’s always a boost to get some celebrities along because they are such familiar faces.

“Chris Taylor said he felt rusty but I think we can forgive him!

“The junior tournaments were played in a good spirit in front of a lot of people. The day was definitely a success.”

It’s not yet known how much money an auction raised for British Heart Foundation and Kick Out Cancer, but McAllister believes it will be an impressive total.
