BOXING:

KYLE Shaughnessy became Oldham’s latest golden boy after stealing the show at the Three Nations boxing tournament.

He saw off Daniel Wooledge 23-14 in a thrilling final at Sheffield’s Institute of Sport, where Scotland, Wales and England’s finest young talent met.

The Counthill pupil had earlier beaten Scotland’s Billy Dougan 8-2 in the semi-final.

Kyle (16), who fights out of the Bridgewater club in Salford, is on a roll after clinching the junior ABA championship at 63kg in May.

He said: “I’m delighted to have won a gold medal.

“I thought I would do well because I have worked hard to prepare, but to actually go and do it feels great.

“Hopefully I can keep it going.”

Delighted dad Mark added: “We (the family) follow Kyle all around the country to show our support.

“He did brilliantly at the Three Nations so it’s onwards and upwards from here.”

Kyle was anxiously awaiting a telephone call to see if he was included in the Great Britain squad for the junior European Championships in the Ukraine next month, but unfortunately he did not make the final cut.

Mark continued: “He must have had a good case for inclusion in the team because he is on top form.

“He showed what he is capable of at the Three Nations.

“But there is a lack of funding so only four lads were selected.

“Kyle will keep working hard and next year has a great chance of inclusion.”

Look out for Kyle’s future progress in your Oldham Evening Chronicle.
