Oldham’s Jewell sparkles

OLDHAM under-15s gave their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Lancashire Schools’ Ainsworth Trophy a boost when they recorded a 28-run win against Rochdale in a Lancashire Schools’ Merit League game at Greenfield Cricket Club.
The town team have given a good account of themselves in the competition, and they boosted their chances of going further with a first innings score of 155 for eight.
Chris Jewell (Royton CC) led the way with an excellent knock of 52, while Ellis Helire-Catherall (Woodhouses CC) chipped in with 28.
The visitors struggled in their reply before eventually being bowled out for 127, with Callum Porteus (Royton CC) claiming a superb haul of four for 48.
Club-mate Connor Hey claimed three for 26, while Liam Parfitt (Greenfield CC) and Jordan Whyatt (Heyside CC) took two for 27 and one for 19 respectively.
GREENFIELD Cricket Club is hosting a summer school from Monday, July 26.
Run by former Greenfield all-rounder Ben Johnson, the five-day course is for school years five, six, seven and eight. The cost is £25 and to enrol, contact Fred Bottom on 01457 870436.
