CRICKET: LANCASHIRE under-11s produced fantastic performances to clinch the runners-up spot at the Taunton Cricket Festival, thanks in no small part to two local youngsters.
St Mary’s, Greenfield pupil James Howard scored the crucial runs in a nail-biting last-ball victory over Kent, while Nathan Jones, who attends Knowsley Junior School, top-scored with 20 not out against Sussex, against whom Howard also claimed three for 31 with the ball.
Lancashire started with a losing draw against eventual champions Surrey, but earned a winning draw against Cornwall and two outright victories, at the expense of Sussex and Oxfordshire.
The final match, for the annual Kathleen Charlson Trophy, saw opponents Kent post 132 for seven off 40 overs.
Lancashire needed 12 runs from the last over, with Howard and Cameron McCulloch defending the final wicket.
The first five deliveries went for singles, meaning only a six could secure a tie, and Howard smacked the ball over mid-wicket to ensure the draw. It also meant Lancashire held on to second place overall.
The trophy will be shared between the two counties for the next 12 months.
