Rangers gain royal approval

Rugby League: IN any sport, some training sessions are more intense than others. That’s just how it goes.

But when the Royal Marines swung into town for an hour-long workout with Saddleworth Rangers under-16s, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

“They ran the lads into the ground,” said team manager Alan Bolton.

When the marines sent out an email offering their services to local sports clubs, Rangers invited the marines to Churchill playing fields.

The visitors handed out DVDs and leaflets as part of a recruitment drive.

Back in match action, the under-16s lost a thrilling contest 28-22 against Orrell St James.

Two quick tries from Orrell gave them the upper hand before Lewis Galbraith collected from Ben White to score. White converted the try.

Orrell then capitalised on Rangers mistakes to lead 22-6.

Danny Lomax replied following a knock-on and White added the extras, and just before the break Scott Booth crossed and White converted to make it 22-18.

A converted try 12 minutes after half-time put Orrell firmly in the driving seat and they held on to their lead, despite Ryan Maneely crossing and White scoring a conversion.

White was Rangers’ man of the match, Ashley Webb was named top tackler, and Lomax took the coach’s award.

SADDLEWORTH Rangers play host to Waterhead tonight in the final of the John
Burke under-18s Trophy (7pm). Admission is adults £2, OAPs £1, children
