Travis on song as under-16s cruise

NETBALL: OLDHAM under-16s cruised to a 58-23 win over close rivals Tameside.

Alice Travis was again to the fore, with a 96-per-cent return and missing only two shots in the final quarter.

Linda Onouha was strong in defence, repeatedly turning the ball over, while an injury to goalkeeper Charlotte Stafford in the second quarter gave a chance to Ellie Wild, who proved herself with some great interceptions.

The introduction of Gabby Marshall in the second half at centre provided Oldham with another strong option. Marshall has the all-round game as a centre, not only feeding the shooters with accuracy but defending and turning the ball over.

TOO many unforced errors was so costly for Oldham under-14s, who slipped to a 39-38 defeat against Tameside.

The local outfit started brightly. With shooters Natalie Hulme and Holly Joyce in fine form, Oldham went in at the first break 12-10 ahead.

The second quarter started goal for goal, but then Tameside found an extra gear and Oldham couldn’t keep up and were a goal down at half-time.

Tameside continued in the same vein in the third quarter as Oldham were punished for making several mistakes.

The final quarter saw Oldham finally show some form and, with shooters Hulme and Joyce consistently finding the net, it was Tameside who were hanging on at the end.
