Royton revel in turnaround

CRICKET: THE turnaround at Royton Cricket Club over the last decade has been a real eye-opener in the Central Lancashire League.

Ten years ago, they turned out just four junior teams.

Since then, the leadership of junior chairman Barry Sandiford-Mitchell has inspired a transformation, and more than 100 children attend training sessions under the guidance of 10 ECB-qualified coaches.

Royton now boasts eight junior sides in the summer.

They are made up of keen youngsters aged between seven and 18 years. Two teams also play indoor cricket during winter.

Royton were one of the first clubs to receive ECB status in 2005. Barry said: “We have won CLL titles at under-11, 13 and 15 level, and numerous young cricketers have gone on to represent district and county teams.”
