FOOTBALL: PHOENIX Athletic under-13s saw off high-flying Fothergill Falcons on penalties in the Rochdale and Oldham Sunday League Cup quarter-final.
The tie finished 4-4 after extra-time, with Cameron Reavey (two), Adam Evans and Aaron Beckett on target for Phoenix.
Goalkeeper Matthew Leigh saved Fothergill’s first penalty, after which Phoenix converted all their spot-kicks.
MATTHEW Singleton pounced twice in Chaddy End under-16s’ 4-1 victory at the expense of Northside.
Scott McBride and Danny Cooper also found the net.
OLDHAM under-14s’ game against Tameside was abandoned with 10 minutes remaining, when the opposition goalkeeper was knocked out in a challenge.
Oldham had been trailing to a 15th minute goal. Their opponents were handed the three points.
They take on Manchester on Saturday in a league and Talbot Cup first-round double-header.
The winners of the cup tie go on to meet Wigan in the quarter-finals.
OLDHAM under-15s crashed out of the English Schools FA Inter-Association Trophy following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Mid-Oxfordshire in the quarter-final.
Adam Clee’s side found themselves a goal down within five minutes, and their opponents added another goal after a quarter-of-an-hour.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession for the rest of the tie, Oldham could not get on the scoresheet.
Clee was proud of his players but hit out at a late change of venue.
He said: “It was a bit of a farce to be honest. We got a call on the morning of the game to say it would be played at Chipping Norton instead of Ardley United.
“That added about 25 minutes to our journey, which took four hours and was quite draining for the lads considering they had such a big game to think about.
“We were caught cold early on by two quick goals, but after that we were superb and to a man, I am proud of them.”
