FOOTBALL:

ST EDWARD’S Primary School were over the blue moon after winning the MCFC Academy football festival.

The team, comprised of Year Five and Six pupils, did not concede a goal throughout the
competition, and beat hosts St Joseph’s 1-0 in the final, courtesy of a Michael Grabowski strike.

The tournament was organised by Manchester City’s academy. Coaches from the club’s youth

set-up have strong ties with St Joseph’s, and have provided coaching sessions at the school.

St Edward’s headteacher Peter Moore said: “I also knew it would be difficult if we played against St Joseph’s on their home soil.

“It was a special atmosphere because in the final, all of their pupils came out of the school building to watch the match.

“We played in four group games before the final and did not let in a goal, which shows how hard the team worked.”

MATTHEW Singleton struck twice for Chaddy End under-16s as they saw off Hopwood Lads 5-1 in the Rochdale and Oldham Youth League. Also on the mark were Michael Berrisford, Danny Turner and Jaydn Knox.

CHADDERTON Park under-14s drew 2-2 with Shawclough. The under-11s Lions lost 8-2 to Rochdale St Clements.

HEYSIDE Juniors under-16s saw off Failsworth Dynamos 6-0. Jordan Holt and Kyle Townsend notched braces during a comprehensive victory. Matthew Toop and Jordan Cooper did the rest of the damage for Heyside. The under-16s also lost 2-0 to Chaddy End.

CHADDERTON Park under-11s Eagles edged out Radcliffe Borough 4-3 through a Joe Ray brace and goals from Joe Mikietyn and Alex Knight.
