YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU . . . Katie Zelem is in the England under-17s squad.
KATIE Zelem’s latest England call-up has made her the centre of attention at Manchester United.
The Blue Coat pupil (15) is part of the under-17s side set to tackle Iceland, Sweden and host nation Poland in the UEFA European Championships qualifiers.
She flies out on Tuesday with her sights set on making a good impression during a 10-day stay.
Katie, who operates in midfield or just off the strikers, has been with United since she was nine, and is now the leading light of the club’s youth set-up.
“The other girls aspire to be just like Katie,” said Emma Fletcher, director of the club’s centre of excellence.
“Players with similar ability have come and gone — the difference being they didn’t have Katie’s attitude.
“She leads by example in training twice a week, and plays brilliantly every weekend.
“Obviously she has been involved with England before, but the fact she is off to the qualifiers, and playing above her age grade, has made everyone sit up and take notice.”
The centre of excellence sides currently play friendlies in a group which also comprises of Everton, Liverpool, Cumbria, Crewe and Blackburn.
But talks are under way to join a competitive league next season.
If all goes to plan, Katie can stay with the Red Devils for another two years. When she is 17 they will help her find a club in the National League or Super League.
Mum Gillian hopes her daughter shines during her time overseas — but doesn’t expect to hear about it before everyone else.
“I might get the odd text, but I am more likely to find out about Katie’s progress on Facebook or Twitter,” she said.
“She is getting to the age where exchanging messages with mates is a much more pressing matter.
“Joking aside, it is fantastic news. Her club form has been good enough to earn a place in the national side, and now she is looking forward to hopefully doing well in Poland.
“She wants a career in football and PE is a big part of her GCSEs. This is all part of the learning curve.”
