Newell sets up semi-final bout

BOXING: IN-FORM John Newell is through to the ABA national semi-finals after a convincing

18-12 victory over Merseyside’s Michael Leather.

Oldham fighter Newell (pictured) successfully continued the defence of his junior title by winning every round at Cedar Mount High School in Gorton, despite a spirited performance from his opponent.

The next round takes place next month in Wakefield, with the date and venue to be confirmed.

Newell’s opponent is also yet to be decided, although he will be from Yorkshire.

In the meantime, the hard work continues at Shannon and Ancoats gym.

Dad Tony said: “John did well but I must say, Michael Leather was a decent kid and he put up a strong fight.

“In the end he was worn down by John, who picked him off with the jab and caught him with a couple of left hooks.

“John is over the moon to progress to the semi-finals as it is one step closer to the ultimate goal, which is defending the title he won last year.

“He is his own biggest critic and maybe he feels he can step it up again, but at the end of the day he won every round and should be pleased.

“John is looking forward to the semi-finals regardless of who he ends up fighting.”
