Last-ball loss for holders

CRICKET: Shaw under-15s, Leicester Shield holders for the past four years, crashed out in the first round after a last-ball defeat to Droylsden.

Lawrie Hughes retired on 50 and Matthew Allott made 29 as the holders reached 93 for two.

Droylsden got to the last over needing six runs, and then one off the final delivery — and Liam Smith held his nerve to clinch victory, taking his personal tally to 35.

Droylsden go to the winners of Saddleworth ‘A’ v Moorside ‘B’ in the second round.

Royton posted 89 for eight before opponents Stayley fell 24 runs short of their target for the loss of nine wickets.


UPPERMILL under-17s fell agonisingly short of the target set by opponents Friarmere in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League. Friarmere posted 88 for seven before their opponents, who had lost three wickets, went into the final over needing 12 runs to win the contest.
They narrowed the gap but could not reach their goal, with Zaf Munir claiming three for 19.

Joshua Lees made an undefeated 47 for Greenfield as they finished on 113 for four, before restricting Saddleworth ‘A’ to 101 for four.

Bamford Fieldhouse, who ended their overs on 69 for seven, lost to Glodwick, who reached their target with nine wickets to spare.

Stayley were bowled out for 86 by Austerlands, who achieved a winning total for the loss of two wickets.

Heyside mustered 107 for three prior to restricting Ashton to 94 for six.

Moorside’s match against Saddleworth ‘B’ had to be abandoned due to deteriorating light.
