RUGBY: FOUR out of five ain’t bad. That was Saddleworth’s impressive record in the Oldham Schools’ Rugby League finals.
They reached the final of the other age group — Year Eights — but were beaten by Failsworth, who ruined the school’s chances of a clean sweep In the Year Sevens final at Oldham RUFC, Saddleworth defeated Failsworth 26-0, thanks to tries from Oliver Russell (two), Luke Scarff, Liam Aspin and Josef Finch. Russell also kicked three goals.
But it was a different story in the Year Eights showdown on the same afternoon as Failsworth recorded a stunning 40-24 win.
Cameron Humphreys was the star of the show as he scored five tries.
Captain Nathan Chorlton weighed in with a couple and kicked four goals, while Louis Myers also crossed.
Reece Travis registered a hat-trick of tries for Saddleworth and Allistair Lloyd also touched down in a fine performance on debut.
The Year Nine and 10s games were staged at Hollinwood ARLFC, and again Saddleworth were to the fore.
In the Year Nines final, Matthew Jackson crossed five times in a 38-6 win over Waterhead Academy.
And there was another notable individual display in the Year 10s.
Tom Speat bagged four tries in the opening 10 minutes as Saddleworth defeated Our Lady’s 36-0.
Saddleworth’s run of success was started by the Year 11s, who swept aside Waterhead 72-0 in an earlier final.
