MIKEY THOMPSON
SWIMMING: OLDHAM Aquatics star Mikey Thompson has been selected to represent England at the Sainsbury’s UK Schools Games in Sheffield.
The 16-year-old, who has dwarfism, will battle it out with swimmers from other countries in the disabled 50 metres butterfly category at the event, which runs from September 1 to 4.
His call-up comes on the back of a superb display for the North-West regional team at the National Junior and Youth Disability Championships, which saw him claim gold in six categories.
His first senior medals came at the end of last year at the British Open Disability Championships, in which he clinched a pair of silvers and two bronzes.
Oldham Aquatics head coach Carly Herbert said: “Mikey’s inclusion in the England squad is a fantastic personal achievement and it is also brilliant news for our club, because it puts us on the map.”
Alex claims 11 medals
ALEX Crossland-Robins, one of the shining lights in Oldham’s advanced training squad, won 11 medals at the Aquabears Open summer meeting in Salford.
The 11-year-old took gold in the 200-metre butterfly and silver in individual medley (400m and 200m), 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle.
Alex’s bronze medals came courtesy of his efforts in butterfly (50m and 100m), backstroke (100m and 50m) and freestyle (200m and 50m). He missed out on a medal in 100m freestyle after finishing fourth.
Alex also secured bronze in 200m butterfly at the ASA British Gas North-West region age-group championships at Manchester Aquatics Centre.
