Football talent sought for trials

Date published: 27 July 2011

TALENTED young footballers are sought for a trial in Manchester tomorrow night.

UK Football Trials is holding events across the country to search for the finest talent aged between 10 and 23 years old.

The latest event visits Manchester’s Lucozade Powerleague football centre.

It gives players the chance to showcase their skills in front of head coach John Dungworth and professional scouts — and from there, they could even go on to sign a professional contract.

Dungworth, who was a first-team coach at Sheffield Wednesday in 2009 and is a UEFA
Pro-License holder, has developed England internationals such as goalkeeper Paul Robinson, centre-back Jonathan Woodgate and midfielder Alan Smith.

Each player involved will be tested on their physical, technical and personal attributes and given a 'UKFT rating' so scouts can judge their skills and ability.

Founder Mark Jones explained: “All too often we hear about excellent young footballers being prematurely released or failing to get through professional trials.

“UK Football Trials gives them a chance to get straight back into a top level team.

“Chris Smalling came through a trial event like ours and is now a £10million footballer with Manchester United and England. There are many players like Chris out there but they just don’t know how to get in front of a scout.

“We make sure they get the opportunity to showcase their skills.”
