Skipper inspires triumph

CRICKET: SADDLEWORTH and District League under-15s colts enjoyed a comfortable 72-run victory over the Ribblesdale League at Salesbury in the Michael Roache Trophy.
At 75 for four after 16 overs it was looking like the Saddleworth lads might not bat out their 40 overs.
But skipper Ben Corbett’s knock of 46, supported by Bamford’s Matt Buckley (29) and Stayley’s Nick Woodhead (29), ensured they went the distance and reached a healthy 201 for eight.
Although the Ribblesdale openers put on 41 it was good bowling and field positioning that kept them at bay.
All of the bowlers returned good figures but Austerlands’ Luke Ellis with three for 23 from 6.5 overs and Shaw’s Adam Temple (three for 19 from five overs) were the pick as the hosts were dismissed for 129.
However, the victory was not enough to see Saddleworth progress as Palace Shield finished one point ahead of them after the three games.
The league’s under-17s colts suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of their Uppermill counterparts.
Opener J Lawrence produced an unbeaten 91 as Saddleworth made it to 186 before the final wicket fell.
Saddleworth’s B Tunncliff claimed 27 for two but Uppermill reached their goal with four wickets to spare.
Heyside under-17s won the Saddleworth and District League title after a final day wash-out.
