CRICKET: MOORSIDE ‘A’ won the inaugural Saddleworth and District Cricket League under-15s play-off final by a narrow 10-run margin at home to Bamford Fieldhouse — and in doing so denied their opponents the chance of completing the double.
Moorside batted first and Charlie Price again showed his class by retiring on 50.
The hosts were 100 for two with three overs remaining, but slumped to 109 all out as Danny Matthews ripped the batting line-up with figures of six for two.
In reply, the away team ran out of overs, with their innings ending on 99 for nine.
One consolation Bamford took away was their successful coin toss — they won the right to host the Leicester Shield final against Greenfield on Bank Holiday Monday (1pm).
SHAW and Saddleworth will go head-to-head in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League’s under-13s Cup final.
The match, at Shaw’s ground of Holebottom Clough, takes place on Sunday, September 4, with a 9.45am start. Ashton play host to Greenfield in the under-17s Romida Shield final on Saturday, September 10 (1pm).
THE CLL colts will play the North Lancs and Cumbria League in the final of the Inter-League Competition at Middleton CC on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29 (1.15pm).
The team contains former Royton spinner Joe Lovell.
THE Saddleworth and District Cricket League Colts failed to qualify for the final of the Inter-League Competition after a six-wicket loss against their Ribblesdale counterparts.
Michael Bird’s side did not do themselves justice with the bat, slumping to 97 all out inside 32 overs.
Joe Hepworth, of Greenfield, top-scored with 20, while Shaw wicketkeeper Mark Chadwick made 14.
Josh Higgins (Greenfield), aided by excellent slip catches from Bird, bagged both openers for nought and four respectively, to give Saddleworth hope.
Bird (Uppermill) and Callum Jones (Shaw) were also among the wickets in the game staged at Saddleworth, but it was the Ribblesdale League who emerged victorious.
