CHILD’S PLAY: James Howard struck 71 not out for Saddleworth seconds.
CRICKET: JAMES Howard proved himself to be an old head on young shoulders when he produced a dazzling display for Saddleworth seconds against Droylsden.
The 12-year-old mustered an unbeaten 71, and club officials believe it could be the first half-century scored by a junior at senior level since Lancashire great Harry Pilling in the 1950s.
Chasing 138, Saddleworth found themselves three for two after losing Jeff Lawrence and Adam Smalley early, but James’ partnership of 90 with Darren Beswick put them on the way to a seven-wicket triumph.
His 71 came off 93 balls and included eight fours and a six.
James’ previous personal best for the seconds, 19 not out, was also against Droylsden earlier this season in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
Delighted dad Steven said: “James is in great form at the moment. We are all extremely proud and impressed.
“He has never been fazed by the prospect of playing in an open age team alongside adults.
“At the end of the match, several Droylsden players came up to me to say how good they thought James was, and his Saddleworth team-mates were in agreement.”
Youngsters must wait until the age of 13 to play for an open age side unless they represent their county. James has permission to feature due to the fact he plays for Lancashire.
“We have been searching through old records and asking older members if they can remember any other young player scoring a senior 50 at James’ age,” added Steven.
“The only possibility is Harry Pilling, which was obviously a long time ago.
“Hopefully James can continue to progress. He has certainly taken plenty of confidence from his big innings.”
