RUGBY: HIGGINSHAW Eagles under-17s claimed a 34-28 win at the expense of last season’s North-West Counties League Division Two champions Thatto Heath despite missing a number of regulars.
Jamie Mayall converted Charlie Eddleston’s opener and, after Thatto levelled matters, Luke Roberts crossed and Mayall added the extras.
Thatto replied with two quickfire tries prior to Mayall goaling after Luke Makin crashed over.
In the second period Higgy edged it thanks to tries from Bradley Turner, Kyle Chadwick and Eddlestone, with Mayall finishing with a return of five successful kicks.
SADDLEWORTH Rangers under-16s lost 26-16 to Clock Face despite tries from Bowden Morgan, Joe Harrison-Brown and Jack Johnson.
Brad Grantmyre and Dominic D’Adamo added the extras.
The under-14s were beaten 18-0 by Milnrow Cobras.
Rangers made a bright start and displayed plenty of enthusiasm, restricting their opponents to just one try in the first half, which came after a handling error.
Cobras pulled away after the break but Sam Ireland impressed for Rangers with some strong tackling and Nathan Knowles earned praise for his committed performance.
Lewis Adams was the side’s top tackler.
WATERHEAD under-15s enjoyed a comprehensive 26-8 win over Wigan St Judes. Billy McDermott and Matty Jackson scored two tries each and Jonny Aspin also crashed over. Adam Wells converted three times.
